G in HK
G was in HK last weekend! I took 2 days off and we went shopping, exploring in Cheung Chau, seafood dinner in Sai Kung, caught 'Lust, Caution' in all of its entirety (though I understand that they will also show the R21 version in SG too soon), and ate ate ate! We also went for a event that had Human Nature, Tata Young and the Korean dude Se7en performing. Pictures of that are already on my Facebook but I will also post some of those in a separate post.
This was at Thai Basil - a fusion Thai restaurant that I really like but is actually quite expensive. We had grilled pork neck, soft shell crab tempura paper roll and a pad thai. The drinks were great too - I had a lychee ginger soda and G had a Thai lime tea.
This was at Cheung Chau - a small island off main Hong Kong. It took us 30 minutes to get there and it was a small quiet fishing town where there were ZERO cars altogether. The locals cycled, and the rest of us walked. We walked along the beach where we saw this ang moh chick sunbathing topless - G was like 'Look! Ang moh girl sunning her boobies' and we were wondering why nobody cared - then we got upclose and she was quite fugly so no wonder nobody was really looking at (free) boobies on display. We trekked a lot just to see the sights and was sadly unimpressed. I think we still remember how gorgeous Western Australia is lah. Nonetheless, it was nice to get away from the busy cities and polluted airs of Hong Kong.

Something I saw on the streets of Cheung Chau and was so funny that I had to take a photo. Haha! I also managed to capture a shot of G burping in front of this place haha but decided to spare him the embarrassment and not put that pic up hee!

We went to eat at this Japanese grill restaurant! The food kicked ass (I wanna go back there again!) but as usual, a bit steep (Eating out in HK is generally a S$30 - $40 affair each) We grilled a whole squid, beef cubes, ox tongue, fantastic pork bellys in spices, mushrooms, and these strips of beef that you see me grilling!
I like the star tongs!!
On G's last night, we went to have seafood with some of my friends at Sai Kung. Sai Kung is very far away from where I live which explains why this was my first trip ever there. My colleague who brought us there, bought our food from this fisherman in his boat. We stood there at the pier and she bargained for the price of the food, 'flirted' for better prices, and the fisherman packed the still alive seafood into plastic bags for us and we carted them to a restaurant nearby and told them how we wanted them.
G carried the plastic bags of seafood and told me he could still feel the fish flapping around in the bag as we walked to the restaurant! How fresh is that for seafood! We had a lovely uber fresh garoupa fish, two crabs steamed in egg white which soaked up all of the crab juices, two sorts of prawns - one steamed with heaps of fresh garlic on top; I Love Love Love, one fried with some chilli and spices which was also fantastic. We also had one clam thingy each, and veggies. With good company and great food, G & I enjoyed ourselves. After dinner, we went for dessert which the ang moh in the group was clearly uncomfortable when G & I lapped up 3 durian desserts! Haha! Tanks of seafood for those who didn't choose to buy from fishermen in boats. Apparently it's cheaper to buy from the fishermen.
Taaa daaah! Some of the food. The rest - we were happily eating before we remembered 'hey take photos!' Hurhur.

A parting shot. G & I went for drinks at Opia - a uber chic bar in the oh-so-fashionable Hotel Jia (which is on the same street as my apartment- a mere 2 minute walk away!) Hotel Jia is designed by Philippe Starck (I think!) and basically features a lot of his pieces in the lobby and rooms. If you have the budget when you visit HK next (and dun wish to slum it out with me), you should totally stay there.

My god, what an amazing experience with buying the seafood from the guy in the boat and then taking it somewhere to be cooked! I'd die for something like that here!
